01/17/2019 –
This year the NM MESA team elected to drive to Las Cruces for our Staff Give-back event and holiday get-together on December 12th. The event was hosted in Las Cruces with intentional efforts to take our “Give-back” to different regional communities each year so that students, teachers and resource partners know that NM MESA is working to support all of our MESA communities.
The students and teachers at Centennial High School (CHS) in Las Cruces have begun a program of food/clothing/toiletries collection and distribution to the homeless and hungry people in their community. The NM MESA Club at CHS is spearheading the effort. The student leaders invited all of the other student clubs at Centennial HS to contribute also; and they have wholeheartedly joined in.
Various MESA coordinators brought supplies from Albuquerque, Gallup, Las Vegas and Roswell to contribute to the abundant supplies already gathered at Centennial HS. Lorraine Bridges, (NM MESA Advisor Extraordinaire – Thanks Ms. Bridges), gave us a tour of their pantry and explained how they plan to distribute to their own students in need, by discretely filling backpacks, as well as other community members.
It was a pleasure to join the MESA students during their celebration pizza lunch and hear from their Leadership team about gathering, sorting, packing and distributing the food and toiletry supplies. They planned to deliver all items prior to 12/24/18 while continuing the program throughout 2019 and into the future.
Thanks to Terry Ramirez and Ling Faith-Heuertz for choosing our delicious lunch and dinner venues to ensure that our NM MESA Holiday Give-back was a great success again!
