In collaboration with NM MESA, New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is proud to announce the 2026 STEM Summer Experience (SSE) with the Conservation Center (CSC). The program emphasizes STEM and field-based experiences (e.g., natural resources management, soils, engineering, robotics etc.). This STEM Summer Experience is a FREE 4 day nonresidential summer day camp exclusively for High School students from June 1st-4th, 2026. Students must be picked up and dropped off in Las Vegas at NMHU Campus (details will be provided). Students will start their day at 8:30AM and end at 3:30PM. Lunches will be provided as well as a morning/afternoon snack. Additionally, students will explore careers in STEM, meet local STEM professionals (and future employers!), learn to use innovative science technologies, and strengthen their communications and analytical skills. Upon completing the program, students will get a $150.00 stipend.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a current High School student, incoming 9th- incoming 12th grade, with a preference for sophomores and juniors, from both MESA and non-MESA Northern New Mexico schools
  • Students must submit a completed application, including a teacher endorsement/reference.
  • After the application deadline on May 18th, 2026, applicants will be promptly selected and students will need to confirm their participation by May 22nd, 2026, to secure a spot in this program.
  • This stipend requires the commitment to participate and complete the entire program from June 1-4, 2026. There are not partial stipends.
  • All participating high school students in a MESA school must have an A-0 completed and submitted. Non-MESA students will need to provide additional information and release forms upon selection.
  • Student participants must arrange their own transportation to NMHU campus daily on 6/1-6/4. They need to be dropped off daily at 8:30AM and picked up daily at 3:30PM.
    • A transportation reimbursement stipend is available for students living further than 25 miles from Las Vegas, NM.
  • Participants agree to follow all New Mexico Highlands University policies for the duration of the program. Policies and student behavior contracts will be sent to final participants.
