On November 21st, 2015 New Mexico MESA students from Carlsbad Intermediate, Carlsbad 6th Grade Academy, Portales Junior High, and Berrendo Middle School competed at the New Mexico Electric Car Challenge in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The students built cars powered by a battery and competed in three events. The three events included an oral presentation about the major challenges facing battery-powered electric vehicles, a design challenge about the overall design of the team’s car, and a timed race.
Between Carlsbad Intermediate School and Carlsbad 6th Grade Academy, the Carlsbad teams came home with 9 awards. Carlsbad Intermediate School won the Spirit Award, 3rd place in the design challenge, 1st and 2nd place in the race, and 1st and 3rd place overall. Carlsbad 6th Grade Academy won 1st in the design challenge, 3rd place in the race, and 2nd place overall. The overall places come with a monetary prize for the MESA coaches to continue to build the MESA program at each school.
