CARLSBAD, NM – New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) and Devon Energy recently presented Carlsbad High graduate Yoni Xiong with the Devon Achievement Award, a four-year renewable scholarship totaling $20,000.
In 2013, MESA and Devon partnered to create the scholarship to recognize and encourage students in the pursuit of a career related to the oil and gas industry. Annually, one outstanding high school senior from either Eddy County or Lea County receives the award.
MESA is a pre-college program that prepares students for college and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or related fields. MESA students in junior high and high school participate in a variety of enriched STEM activities throughout the year.
Xiong has been a MESA student since her sixth-grade year. She is continuing her education in the fall at Vanderbilt University pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.
“Yoni has participated in the NM MESA program for seven years,” said Betty Chancey, Southeast Region Coordinator for NM MESA. “I could not begin to list all the achievements and honors she has received during that time. I can say that she is one of the most outstanding students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She will successfully achieve any goal she chooses to pursue and become a leader in her chosen field.”
