New Mexico MESA

Building tomorrow's mathematicians, engineers and scientists. . .Today!

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 North Central Region Field Trip – Abiquiu, NM

MESA students from Mesa Vista High School and Mesa Vista Middle School will join MESA students from Bernalillo High School and Santo Domingo Middle School to explore historical Abiquiu, New Mexico!

We will visit the former home and studio of the late artist Georgia O’Keefe. She had landscaping and a large vegetable garden that she kept there for many years and we will collaborate with the Santa Fe Botanical Gardens in their project to restore her original vision. Now that we have been studying sustainable agriculture and food production, this is a perfect time to start at the roots! Students will receive a Service Learning credit.

Boats in New Mexico?!? Let’s take a ride out on Abiquiu Lake. Park rangers from the Army Corps of Engineers will give a tour of Abiquiu Dam and discuss water quality testing and their role in water rights issues. Should the water go to Albuquerque or to the acequias? They’ll also talk about how a young person can start a career in Resource Management as Park Ranger. Attending students will receive a Leadership credit.

And they’ll have jobs available this summer for 16-24 year olds who are interested in trail building!

Here is the official AGENDA

ADVISORS: Please give your students some background information on Georgia O’Keefe

Check out the LIVE STREAM of the garden we’ll be working on. Have friends and family watch you on the day of the event while you’re having fun in the sun.
