Building tomorrow's mathematicians, engineers and scientists. . .Today!

Middle School-March 17, 2017. High School-March 18, 2017. MESA Day 2017-Volunteer Information

The NM MESA, Inc., Annual Statewide Math and Science MESA Day is designed to encourage the concept of problem solving through teamwork. It salutes NM MESA students for their commitment to academic excellence and reinforces the NM MESA mission of preparing students from historically underrepresented ethnic groups for college majors and careers in math, engineering and science. Below is information that you will need as a volunteer as well as information provided to student teams for your reference.

This year we will be inviting all of our school programs to participate and our NM MESA Staff will be acting as lead event coordinators in all events.  We have spilt our event into a high school and middle school event and are anticipating approximately 400-600 attendees at each.  Our entire event will consist of the multiple portions of the Prosthetic Arm Engineering Design Challenge.  Some will be graded on site, and some will need to be judged prior to the competition.  We are looking for over 60 judges and volunteers at each of our events, in addition to 75-100 volunteers prior to the event.  Judges and volunteers do not need to have technical expertise or previous knowledge as all of our volunteers will be trained on events.  Below are descriptors of all events and available roles.  In addition, once you register you will receive a confirmation email.

This year we will have a large judging portion of our event prior to the event itself.  These roles do not require actual attendance at our MESA Day event and can be done from anywhere on a flexible time frame.  The only technical requirement is an internet connection that can gain access to a public drop box file. All judges will be trained via webinar session(s) as needed and will be provided with adequate grading instruction.

Assignments will be made and items will be electronically available on February 21 with a due date for return of March 14.  Each judge will be assigned up to 15 items to grade.  Each item takes an average of 20 minutes resulting in a maximum 5 hour commitment over a 3 week period.

Off Site, Pre Competition Grading -Technical Paper

Teams will submit a condensed Technical Paper that is based on their Prosthetic Arm Project using a provided template.  Judges will grade with a provided rubric and return scored rubric according to timeline.

Off Site, Pre Competition Grading-Academic Poster

Teams will submit an academic poster that is based on their Prosthetic Arm Project using a provided template.  Judges will grade with a provided rubric and return scored rubric according to timeline.

Off Site, Pre Competition Grading -Receipt Submittal and Verification

Teams will submit receipts and documentation verifying material usage and cost per unit.  Judges will review and ensure that teams stay within the allotted budget for the project and that all required materials have been submitted.

Most requested volunteer roles are an all-day commitment.  Most of our judge roles require specific day of event training and teams are continually running so judges are unable to be trained mid-day.  But if you can only make a partial day commitment, please note that in your registration (when you can be there) in the additional comments section and you will be assigned according to your availability.  There are a small amount of event assistance roles from 8AM-12PM and from 11AM-3PM, with the majority of our judge roles being all day assignments.

On-Site, Day of Judging– Oral Presentation

Student teams will conduct an oral interview that is based on their Prosthetic Arm Project.  Teams will use their arm, engineering notebook, and submitted electronic poster as visual aids.  Judges will grade according to a provided rubric.  Each room will require a lead room judge that will manage the room judging team.

Prepared Design Challenge-Prosthetic Arm

Prior to MESA Day, student teams were given detailed parameters to meet various event objectives.  Teams will build a prosthetic arm and use Arduino computer programming to transfer items, toss items, and perform a dexterity challenge.  Judges will be trained on assigned task and will assist with arm inspection, event timing, scoring of event, grading, and event management.
