NM MESA Day 2016-Volunteer Information

EVENT DATES:

  • North Area-Thursday, February 18, 2016 at New Mexico Highlands University – Las Vegas, NM.
  • South Area-Monday, February 22, 2016 at New Mexico State University – Las Cruces, NM.
  • Central Area-Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the University of New Mexico – Albuquerque, NM.
  • ALL JUDGE ROLES 7:00 AM-3:00 PM

This year we will be inviting all of our school programs to participate and our NM MESA Staff will be acting as lead event coordinators in all events. We have split our event into 3 Regional events and are anticipating approximately 400-600 attendees at each. We are looking for over 60 judges and volunteers at each of our events. Judges and volunteers do not need to have technical expertise or previous knowledge as all of our volunteers will be trained on events. Below are descriptors of all events and available roles. In addition, once you register you will receive a confirmation email. This is the event website where all future information will be posted.

MESA Day Logistics Information:

NM MESA Events/Judging Roles:

Most requested volunteer roles are an all-day commitment. Most of our judge roles require specific event training and teams are continually running so judges are unable to be trained mid-day. But if you can only make a partial day commitment, please note that in your registration (when you can be there) in the additional comments section and you will be assigned according to your availability. There are a small amount of event assistance roles from 8AM-12PM and from 11AM-3PM, with the majority of our judge roles being all day assignments.

On-Site Challenge – MESA FUNdamentals

Student teams will participate in hands on challenges in 3 areas of exploration-Syntax Charades, Environmental Career Exploration, and Sustainability Supermarket. Teams have been given study resources and websites. They will answer questions and participate in hands on tasks that relate to the content area. Judges will assist with hands on stations, grading, and event management.

Prepared Design Challenge-Prosthetic Arm 2.0

Prior to MESA Day, student teams were given detailed parameters (available to view in our MESA Day Handbook) to meet various event objectives. Teams will build a prosthetic arm and use Arduino computer programming to transfer items, toss items, and perform a dexterity challenge. Judges will be trained on assigned task and will assist with arm inspection, event timing, scoring of event, grading, and event management.

MESA USA

Students have an opportunity to submit a project proposal in addition to their prosthetic hand if they want to participate in our State MESA USA Competition in April, 2016. This event is part of a national MESA USA Engineering Design Competition. All project proposals will be scanned and delivered electronically to Judge Readers. There are 2 volunteer roles available for this event:

  • Event Judges and General Volunteers will collect proposals from teams, ready them for electronic delivery the day of event, and conduct any grading of their Engineering Notebooks and Oral Interview.
  • Proposal Judges will read and grade team proposals after the event and return scores to the event coordinator. Graders do not have to be present at any event as proposals will be delivered electronically with a separate due date of March 11, 2016 for final scores.       Volunteers can be on site judges and proposal readers as they are not done concurrently.

Discovery Fair Vendors/Downtime Volunteers –

NM MESA has limited display space for vendors to provide information and activities to attendees of MESA Day. The discovery fair will run from 9:30-3:00, with setup being from 8:30-9:30.

Other Activities are currently being planned for competition downtime (the time students are not competing in an event). There will be various activities to keep students busy throughout the day. Volunteers will be needed to help with general downtime management.

General Event Help –

NM MESA is offering volunteers the opportunity to assist with other aspects of the 2016 MESA Day. If you can’t commit to a full day of judging, perhaps these opportunities are right for you! General volunteers will be needed from 6:30-9:30 AM. Discovery Fair volunteers will be needed from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. We need assistance with the following:

  • Registration-student and judge registration prior to events.
  • Bus Loading/Unloading-Helping busses taxi through the drop off area and get students escorted inside.
  • General Event Management-Helping to lead students into opening ceremonies, event escorts, and general crowd control as needed.
  • Discovery Fair/Downtime Volunteers-Help throughout the day with crowd control in the discovery fair area, manage the information booth, and assist discovery fair vendors as needed. Volunteers will also assist with other activities during downtime.
